Admission to the University
The entrance requirements and regulations which follow are unless they are specially stated or otherwise ruled by Senate, binding on all students, and they supersede all previous entrance requirements and regulations. In all matters concerning the interpretation of these regulations, the decision of Senate shall be final.
Entrance requirements for admission to first degree courses
NOTE: Throughout these regulations and also in the requirements for admission to courses of study, reference to a pass or passes at ordinary level in the General Certificate of Education means the attainment of Grade A,B, or C in examination results.
Any person shall be eligible for admission to any course leading to first degree in the University if he/she:
a) Satisfies the general entrance requirements of the University unless granted exemptions in accordance with regulations;
b) Satisfies all the requirements prescribed by regulations relating to the relevant School’s Board of Studies as being necessary for such a course of study and;
c) Has been selected for such a course of study
It must be emphasized that admission to the University is by selection and possession of the minimum entry requirements is not by itself a guarantee of acceptance. 3.3 The general entrance requirements
Standard qualifications
Every applicant must hold:
a) Passes in at least five subjects at the General Certificate of Education level;
b) Credit passes in at least five subjects at the Zambian School Certificate or its equivalent
The subjects must be chosen from an approved list, and there are restrictions that forbid the inclusion of overlapping subjects. The subjects at present approved are listed under Approved subjects. At the General Certificate of Education Ordinary level examination from June 1975 onwards a result of A,B, or C will be regarded as a ‘pass’ for the satisfaction of requirements.
Alternative qualifications
Qualifications other than those of the General Certificate of Education or the Zambian School Certificate may be accepted provided they are approved as equivalent by the Senate.
A person holding a two year diploma of the University or College awarding the diploma in special relationship with the University may be regarded as having satisfied the general entrance requirements.
In respect of the diploma programme applicants with a two year Certificate in Business Studies or a Teachers Diploma in Commercial subjects of an institution awarding the certificate shall be reported as having satisfied the general entrance requirements.
Exceptions from the Standard or alternative qualifications – Mature age
A candidate who is twenty five years of age in the academic year in which he proposes to begin his degree may be admitted to any degree course, if he presents evidence of attainments which in the opinion of the University indicates that he has the capacity to pursue the proposed course of study.
