The Computer Science Department.

History of the Department.

The Copperbelt University Computer Science department came into being in 1996 as one of the four departments at the School of Technology with the sole purpose of providing a gateway for Zambia to become more conscious of computer technology. This was done by introducing a Computer Science degree programme that was unavailable at the time the Copperbelt University became one of the top universities in the country in 1988.

Programmes Offered.

The Computer Science department which intends to become a centre of excellence, was established, as stated, to offer a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme. It is a four year programme that aims at providing professional training in computer science.

At the moment the programme is a single major designed around a series of core mandatory hardware and software oriented courses. The programme produces graduates that service computer related sections of Commerce, Industry and Goevernemnt.

The department also offers a two and half years Diploma programme. The Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) is a practical programme of study that is offered in semester modules.

However, the deaprtment has now expanded its repertoire to include a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme in Information Technology, as well as a Masters in Computer Science.

Strengths of the Department.

  • A stayable team of teaching Staff that offers a wide spectrum of skills mix.

  • Offers popular programmes to Commerce and Industry.

  • Offering only two programmes is currently a disguised strength. It is easier to be more focused in the current structure.

  • There is reasonable availability of infrastructure to sustain quality training.

Opportunities the department offers.

The Computer Science department is in a university that is located in the Copperbelt; a region that is a hive of industrial and commercial activity. This is a golden opportunity to interact with industry on various aspects of computer related issues, such as student placements, marketing programmes and getting the much needed good will from the industry.

There is also a wave of automation of almost everything in both domestic and Industrial activity. These will provide sources of applied research areas for both lecturers and students.
