This was done by introducing a Computer Science degree programme that was unavailable at the time the Copperbelt University became one of the top universities in the country in 1988. Programmes Offered. The Computer Science department which intends to become a centre of excellence, was established, as stated, to offer a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme. It is a four year programme that aims at providing professional training in computer science. At the moment the programme is a single major designed around a series of core mandatory hardware and software oriented courses. The programme produces graduates that service computer related sections of Commerce, Industry and Goevernemnt. The department also offers a two and half years Diploma programme. The Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) is a practical programme of study that is offered in semester modules. However, the deaprtment has now expanded its repertoire to include a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme in Information Technology, as well as a Masters in Computer Science. Strengths of the Department.
Opportunities the department offers. The Computer Science department is in a university that is located in the Copperbelt; a region that is a hive of industrial and commercial activity. This is a golden opportunity to interact with industry on various aspects of computer related issues, such as student placements, marketing programmes and getting the much needed good will from the industry.
