Social event and Excursions

Zambia is rich in cultural traditions that include music and dance. It is planned to have one social event at which some cultural groups will entertain the delegates. The Copperbelt University is in the mining city of Kitwe in the heart of the Zambian Copperbelt. Its industrial base provides a host of unique economic, social, and environmental challenges. Kitwe and the Copperbelt provide a good setting for learning and reflecting upon sustainable development and its challenges. Excursions shall be arranged to a number of places and sites within an 80km radius that may include visits to Open Pit Mines, Copper Smelting and Refinery Plants, a Museum, Zoo, Wildlife Park, Bird Sanctuary, etc.

Excursions and Places of Tourist Attraction

EEASA conference has set aside some time during the conference period in which delegates will be accorded an opportunity to tour and visit selected places of tourist attraction. Those interested should indicate to the conference coordinator so that reservations can be made. Please note that the fees for these places are not covered in the conference participation fee. Below are the places to be visited:

  1. Nsobe Game Camp - Outskirts of Ndola
    The Camp is located on a 1500 Hectare Miombo Woodland Game Farm, overlooking an expansive dam, making Nsobe the perfect place for a tranquil and relaxing getway. Game drives are organised daily or you can explore the bush and varied fauna on foot. Nsobe is home to Giraffes, Zebras and 15 species of Antelope including the rare Sitatunga, Black Lechwe and Sable; and over 300 species of bird-life. There are two bream-stocked dams, ideal spots for fishing, canoeing and swimming or just relaxing whilst watching one of Zambia's awesome African sunset.

  2. Chimfushi Orphanage Center - Chingola
    Chimfushi Orphanage Center lies near Chingola, in the far north-west of Zambia. The Chimfushi Wildlife Orphanage is one of the most successful chimpamzee shelters in the world. The orphanage is a heart-warming success story where you can watch rescued chimps playing happily in a safe environment. There are five chimpanzee "families" living in the sanctuary in free-range enclosures that span 1100 acres. Chimps from all around the world are making the journey, rescued from dilapidated zoos and circuses or taken from poachers. In addition to Chimps, Chimfushi also has antelopes, baboons, monkeys, birds and "Billy" the Hippo who despite the name is female.

  4. Daghammarskjold Crash Memorial Site Ndola
    This is the site where the Swedish Diplomat, Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the United Nations, crushed during a peace mission to Zaire (now called Congo D.R). A memorial has been erected for him along the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriage way.

    Another existing tourist attraction is the Polish World War II memorial site located at about 6 kilometers from Bwana Mkumbwa Mine. The Polish memorial site is where about 18,000 polish refugees found asylum after fleeing from Nazi forces in 1943.

  5. Mukuyu & Chichele Mofu Slave Trees - No Charges
    Just near the city is the slave tree called Mukuyu Slave tree around which Arab slave traders held slave markets in the nineteenth century. The Mofu tree is over 200 years old. It was declared a national monument on 21st March 1976. It symbolizes the need to conserve trees.

    There is also Lake Chilengwa. The Lake, which is 14 KM east of Ndola was formed by the collapse of rock into an underlying limestone carven, and has local cultural significance.

  6. Copperbelt Museum
    The Copperbelt Museum is located in the heart of the city of Ndola in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. The Copperbelt Museum was established in 1962 when the Steering Committee of civic and mine leaders met in Ndola to form the Copper Museum Association, with a sole aim of establishing a Living Museum - a Gallery of Natural Resources, with emphasis on Ecology, Conservation, Geology, Mining and local history.
