The Dag Hammarskjöld Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies hereafter referred under the acronym DHIPS or merely as the Institute, is organic to the Copperbelt University (CBU) which is situated in the City of Kitwe within the Copperbelt Province in Zambia. Although the Institute is currently situated at the main Riverside CBU campus, it is scheduled to move to its permanent campus in the vicinity of the crash site of the Second United Nations’ Secretary General, just outside Ndola, the Provincial Capital of the Copperbelt Province. The Institute was established by the Dag Hammarskjöld Living Memorial Initiative (DHLMI), in the memory of the late Dag Hammarskjöld who died whilst on a mission to broker peace in the Congo (present day Democratic Republic of Congo).
The Institute currently offers graduate – level training through a masters degree in peace and conflict studies and undertakes academic and policy research in the area of human rights, governance and peace building; human security and development; and environment, sustainable development and peace. It also undertakes out-reach activities in these areas. Post-graduate and under-graduate level degrees in peace and conflict studies as well as a Think Tank capacity are currently being developed as integral component of the Institute.
A Director with a staff compliment of lecturers, researchers, research associate and administrators and other support staff runs the Institute. At operational level, DHIPS is supported by the general University Administration and a Management Board, while at strategic level, an Advisory Board and the CBU strategic echelon contributes towards DHIPS’s vision and mission founded upon the late Dag Hammarskjöld’s perspective of: “Find something to live for; great enough to die for”.
