Masters Degree Programme – Current Status

The Institute is presently conducting a Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies in three modes of study: Full-Time, Part-Time and Distance learning with three areas of specialization as follows:

  • Human rights, governance and peace building;
  • Human security and development; and
  • Environment, sustainable development and peace.

Soon to be included areas of specialization shall be:

  • Defence and Security Management; and
  • Diplomacy and Strategic Studies.

Most students in the Institute are self-sponsored. Table 1 below provides the breakdown of students currently undertaking the degree of Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies.

The core and common courses for all programmes which will be enriched overtime are as follows:

  1. Introduction to Human Rights Concepts;
  2. Conflict Prevention and Management;
  3. Introduction to Research Methodology; and
  4. Cultural Heritage and Indigenous Knowledge Systems.


The specialization in Human Rights, Governance and Peace building has the following modules:

  1. Political Systems and Institutions of Governance;
  2. Land Rights and Land Acquisition;
  3. Democratisation Process and Women;
  4. Research Methodology in Peace Studies;
  5. Research Proposal, Presentations and Approval;
  6. Housing, Dislocations and Evictions; and
  7. Civil-Military/Civil-Security Relations and Peace building.


The specialization in Human Security and Development has the following modules:

  1. Regional Economic Communities;
  2. Security and Development;
  3. Humanitarian Assistance and Refugees;
  4. Research Methodology in Peace Studies;
  5. Research Proposal, Presentation and Approval;
  6. African Development Initiatives;
  7. Regionalism and Integration; and
  8. Civil - Military/Security Relations and Peace building.

The specialization in Environment, Sustainable Development and Peace has the following modules:

  1. Urban Environments and Conflict;
  2. Land Rights and Land Acquisition;
  3. Bio-diversity and Eco-development;
  4. Research Methodology in Peace Studies;
  5. Research Proposal, Presentations and Approval;
  6. Mineral Resources and Sustainability;
  7. Natural Resources Conflict and Pollution; and
  8. Housing, Dislocations and Evictions.
