Practical training is an essential integral element of the Diploma programme in the Civil Engineering.
Students enrolled in this programme are required to complete a period of 20 weeks practical training spread over the first and second academic long breaks of the three year training period.
At the end of each vacation, students are required to submit a report and a diary in which the activities during the training period are recorded and certified by the employer.
Final year Diploma students are required to undertake a final year project. The project is mainly in the form of structural design & detailing works, although not strictly limited to this subject area of study.
At least two presentations of the students’ project work, culminating in a final presentation of the work are assessed and graded during the academic year.
Marks awarded during these assessments result in the final grading of the student’s project work.
All projects must reflect some degree of originality by the student. Projects involving write-ups must be grammatically correct, indicating the ability of the student to express thoughts clearly. An abstract not exceeding 300 words should be included in the write-up, together with a statement signed by the student confirming that he/she is the sole author. Three copies of the project write-up in its final form must be filed with the Head of Department by the deadline dates announced during the course of the year.
A final project assessed as incomplete by the examiners may be resubmitted by a stipulated date for reassessment. In this case the final grade awarded will be ‘P’ or ‘F’ (Fail).
A student who passes all courses/subjects prescribed for that year will progress to the following year or graduate in the case of a student in his/her final year.
A student who has failed in three or more courses/subjects shall not be permitted to proceed to the next year of study or graduate in the case of a final year student.
The other rules and regulation relating to this programme are the same as those stipulated for the degree programmes and those under the ‘senate rules of progression’.
The Diploma is not divided in classes like the degree courses.
Upon successful academic and practical completion of this programme, a student is awarded the Copperbelt University’s Diploma in Civil Engineering
