Rules and Regulations (Degree Programmes)

  1. Thesis / Design Project

    The fifth year thesis or design project shall be assessed on the basis of the final submission only. All final year students are required to submit a thesis or design project proposal for approval by the respective Departments. The proposal must be submitted in triplicate  preferably one month before the end of the fourth year but not later than the second week of the first term of his/her final year of study.
    An acceptable thesis is required for the award of a degree. The thesis must reflect some degree of originality by the student. It must be grammatically correct, indicating the ability of the student to express thoughts clearly. An abstract not exceeding 350 words should be included in the thesis, together with a statement signed by the student confirming that he/she is the sole author. Three copies of the thesis in its final form must be filed with the Head of Department by the deadline dates announced during the course of the year.

  2. Continuous Assessment of Studio projects and Computer Studies

    Studio projects are examined and provisional marks awarded on completion of each project.  At the end of the academic year, the year’s portfolio for each student is reviewed in the presence of the candidate.

    The final mark awarded is based upon provisional marks, re-submitted work and evidence of progress and interview with the candidate.

    Computer studies and related courses are assessed in a similar manner.

     

  3. Continuous Assessment and Written Examinations

    1. For all theoretical subjects, assessment will be by assignment and by a formal written examination at the end of the Academic year.  Assignments may be in the form of tests and/or exercise and will be marked and returned to the candidate soon after submission.
    2. Candidates must pass the continuous assessment component before being permitted to write the final examination.
    3. No candidate will be allowed to sit for an examination having failed to meet 40% pass mark.  A DQ (disqualified) will be recorded on the results slip.
    4. Continuous assessment includes a combination of tests, assignments, field work, paper presentations, lab work, and studio/design work as determined by the lecturer/department (subject to senate regulations).
  4. Course Registration

    In addition to the general regulations provided by the University, the School considers applications from final year degree students to register for the normal course load along with prerequisite courses carried from lower years of study subject to satisfactory performance.
  5. Progression Rules

    Any student  who fails to present himself/herself for the end  of year examination in a subject will have the letters NE (Not Examined) entered on his/her record for that subject unless he/she is being considered for a deferred examination.

  6. Any Student who has failed twice to obtain a pass in a subject shall not be entitled to be re-registered in that subject without prior permission of Senate.

    To satisfy the examiners a student must achieve a pass level in studio projects throughout the year. The portfolio of studio projects will be submitted to a Board of Examiners at the end of third and fourth years of studies.

    A thesis project assessed as incomplete by the examiners may be resubmitted by a stipulated date for reassessment. In this case the final grade awarded will be ‘P’ or ‘F’ (Fail).
  7. No candidate will be allowed to seat for an examination having failed to meet 80% class attendance.  A DQ (disqualified) will be recorded on the results slip.
