Rules and Conditions for the Bachelor's Degree Programmes in the School of Business

  1. General Conditions

    • To qualify for the award of a degree, a candidate must have
      completed full-time or part-time courses as provided in these
      regulations.
  2. Duration of study

    1. The course of study for all bachelors degrees in the School of Business shall be completed within a period of not less than 4 and not more than 6 academic years.
    2. For the purpose of computing the maximum period fora course of study, the years in which a candidate withdrew from studies with permission shall not be counted.
  3. Academic Load

    1. A full time student reading for the Bachelor of Accountancy shall normally take six full courses in each of the four years under the new programme. At the end of the third year and before the commencement of the fourth year, he/she shall be required to do internship in Accountancy for a minimum period often weeks. This entails placement into a well established accounting department of a business organisation.

      A full time student reading for the Bachelor of Business Administration shall normally take six full courses in each of the four years. In the fourth year of study, one of the courses shall be a Thesis. The Thesis shall be graded like any other courses.
       
    2. The Board of Studies or the Dean acting on its behalf may in exceptional circumstances permit a full-time student to register for fewer courses than the normal oad as prescribed in Section C (1) above.
       
    3. A candidate referred to part-time under regulation G(4) shall not register for more than 3 courses in one academic year.
  4. Definition of a Course

    For purpose of these regulations a 'course' is defined as one academic year's study of a subject in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by the Board of Studies.

  5. Exemptions

    A student who has prior to admission to the School of Business, attended, whether at the Copperbelt University or elsewhere, courses of instruction and passed examinations equivalent in standard to courses and examinations which form part of the programme of studies in the School of Business, subject to the approval of Senate, may be exempted from attending classes and examinations in not more than six courses.
  6. Grading

    1. In all the courses offered by the School, the distribution of marks shall be as follows:

      Final Examination 60%
      Continuous Assessment 40%
    2. Continuous assessment shall consist of such term examinations, exercises and other work whose content and length shall be at the discretion of the Lecturer.
    3. The Lecturer responsible for a course may bar a student from sitting final examinations for failure to meet course work requirements including poor performance, non submission of Continuous Assessment or poor attendance record.
    4. The following marking scheme shall be used to grade all work:

  7. Rules of Progression

    1. Progression
      1. To proceed to the next year of study, a candidate must pass ALL the courses taken during the academic year of study.
      2. The Board of Studies may permit a candidate who has failed in no more than one course to proceed and repeat the failed course along with the full load for the subsequent year; except where the failed course is a   pre-requisite to a higher course in which case the candidate shall not be allowed to take a higher course for that year.
      3. To complete a course a candidate shall:

        1. Attend at least 80% of such classes, tutorials, seminars, practical exercises or field work as may be prescribed by the Board of Studies in consultation with the Lecturer concerned;
        2. Perform to the satisfaction of the Board of Studies such prescribed practical, written and other course work as shall be required;
        3. Obtain an overall pass grade in the course.
           
    2. Granting of a Pass, P, Grade
      1. On the recommendation of the Board of Studies, the Senate may grant a student who fails in a course with a D+ a pass denoted P.
      2. To qualify for a ‘P’ Grade a student MUST:
        1. Not have failed in more than two (2) courses;
        2. Subject to (a) above, a ‘P’ shall only be granted in a course in which a student has failed with a D+;
        3. Have passed in the continuous assessment of the course being    considered for ‘P’ Grade;
        4. Have obtained an average grade of C+ or better in the courses passed.
      3. A ‘P’ Grade will be granted to a student in not more than one full-course in any one academic year. In the event of a student qualifying for ‘P’ Grade in more than one course and subject to (b) (i) above, the Board of Studies shall specify which other course should be granted a ‘P’ Grade.
      4. A Pass, ‘P’, shall count as “C” for purposes of computing certificate classification.
      5. Failure to meet the conditions of a ‘P’ Grade, does not count as a second fail for the purpose of registration in a subsequent academic year.
    3. Part-Time
      1. The Board of Studies shall refer a student to part-time studies in the following cases:
        1. Any student who has failed 2 courses where the academic year consists of 5 courses;
        2. Any student who has failed 3 courses where the academic year consists of 6 courses;
        3. A student referred to part-time study must pass all courses before being allowed to proceed to full time study.
    4. Deferred Examinations
      1. A candidate, who through illness or other reasonable cause is unable to present himself/herself for an examination, sessional or otherwise may make an application to the School for the consideration of his/her case.  Such application shall be forwarded to the Dean of School through the Dean of Students before the date of the examinations.  It should be noted that misreading the time-table and pressure of work shall not be considered reasonable cause.
      2. The Dean of the School after consideration of any application may permit the applicant to present himself/herself at the next sessional examinations.  The results of a deferred examination shall be treated in a similar manner as those obtained at scheduled examinations.
    5. Repeat Course
      1. Subject to regulations governing progression and Granting of ‘P’ Grade, all courses failed with D+ and D must be repeated.
      2. A student who has failed a repeat course will go on part-time study to repeat the failed course.  If a student fails that course at part-time, he/she shall be excluded.
    6. Exclusion
      1. Being a student who has failed in 3 or more courses in one academic year, which consists of 5 courses.
      2. Being a student who has failed in 4 or more courses in an academic year, which consists of 6 courses.
      3. Being a student who has failed a course while on part time;
      4. Being a student who without permission of the Board of Studies fails to re-enrol for study in any year;
      5. A final year student who fails a repeat course will be allowed to proceed on part-time and complete the said course, subject to the rule requiring a student to complete his/her programme of study within six years.
    7. Re-admission
      1. Readmission will be restricted to higher levels of study i.e. third and fourth year for degree programmes and second and third year for diploma programmes;
      2. Readmission will not be automatic but will be on recommendation by the School after taking into consideration the applicant’s previous academic performance;
      3. Applicants who had been away from School for more than two consecutive years will not qualify for readmission.

      NB:    Once excluded from the School a candidate shall not be considered for re-admission to the School.  However, he/she can be considered for admission to other Schools within the University.
  8. Graduation

    To be eligible for a bachelor’s degree, a student must have completed all required courses in the programme or, have been duly exempted there from.
  9. Classification of the Degree Programme

    1. Grade of Degree

      The Bachelor's degree shall be classified Distinction, Merit, Credit or Pass.
       
    2. Calculation of the Grade of Degree

      1. In calculating the grade of bachelor degree, the following shall be applied for the grades obtained in the third and fourth years

      2. The points classification of the bachelor's degree shall be as follows:
        1. Where there are 11 Courses

          Distinction         39 and above
          Merit   28 - 38.5
          Credit   17 - 27.5
          Pass   0-16.5
               
        2. Where there are 12 courses

          Distinction - 42.5 and above
          Merit - 30.5 - 42
          Credit - 18.5 - 30
          Pass - 0 - 18
  10. Miscellaneous

    1. No student may register for a combination of courses that is incompatible with the basic timetable for the year.
    2. No student may register for a course for which he/she does not have the necessary prerequisites. The Board of Studies may at its sole discretion waive the requirement for a prerequisite for all students or for a particular student.
    3. A student shall register for courses on or by the dates determined by Senate. Only in exceptional circumstances will a student be registered for a course more than 3 weeks after the commencement of the course.
    4. A student shall not change his/her course enrollment or degree programme without the written approval of the Dean of School. A student wishing to change courses or programmes of study is required to apply formally to the Dean of School within three weeks of the commencement of the academic session. After due consultations with Heads of Departments, may grant the desired change to the applicant.
    5. Every student is required to attend a minimum of 80(%of lectures, seminars and tutorials given in each course in an academic year. A lecturer with the approval of the School, may withdraw a student from a course during the academic year on the grounds of his/her
      failure after due warnings, to fulfill the compulsory class attendance, tutorials, field projects or written requirements of the course as specified by the Lecturer responsible.
    6. Except with the special permission of the Board or Studies, a student shall be withdrawn from a course if he or she has been absent for more than three consecutive weeks in an academic year.
    7. A student in his/ her first year who withdraws or is withdrawn from studies within the first three weeks of the academic year shall be regarded as a new applicant, should he/she wish to apply to the School to resume studies.
    8. A student who wishes to interrupt his / her course or study shall seek leave of absence from the Board of Studies by giving notice addressed to the Dean or School through the Dean of Students. The Board of Studies or the Dean of School acting on its behalf shall
      grant permission of withdrawal in writing, if upon investigations, there is a good cause.
    9. Every student who wishes to be absent from Campus on account of illness, attending conferences, sports or any such other engagements, and which absence shall involve missing classes or examinations must seek prior permission of the Dean of School through the Dean of Students. Permission may not be granted if a student proceeds without the requisite prior leave of absence.
    10. Appeals from the decisions of the Dean of School or Board of Studies shall lie to the Senate.
    11. Except with the express permission of Senate, a student who, without permission withdraws from his/her course of study shall be barred from further studies in the School of Business.
