Progression Rules
Students may be excluded for unsatisfactory progress during the year in accordance with the University General Regulations.
Rules for progression
A student who has passed all courses prescribed for that year will progress to the following year or graduate in the case of a student in his/her final year.
A student who has failed ONE course may proceed to the next year of study but must repeat the failed course.
A student who fails TWO courses must repeat the failed courses on Part-time study and pass both courses before he/she proceeds to the next year of study.
A student who has failed three or more courses shall be excluded from the School.
A student who has been prevented from taking the final examination(s) by illness or by any other factors which is deemed beyond his/her control may be permitted by the Board of Examines to take deferred examination(s).
Candidates may apply to repeat failed courses. There shall be no supplementary examinations.
Comment Codes
- Clear Pass: Recorded when a student has passed all the courses for which he is registered in a year. The student may continue under the same study programme (i.e. full time/ part time). This comment is specific to the academic year and made irrespective of pre-requisites or performance in previous academic years.
- Repeat Academic Year: Recorded when a student is required to repeat that academic year of study as specified by the School concerned.
- Proceed: Recorded for students who have not passed all the courses for which they have registered, but are allowed to continue under the same study programme (i.e., full-time or part-time).
- Proceed and Repeat: Recorded for students who have not passed all the courses for which they have registered but are allowed to continue under the same study programme on condition that they repeat the course they have failed in the next academic year.
- Part-time: Recorded when students have to continue at part-time. Such students must contact the Academic Office within two weeks of publication of results to indicate whether or not they intend to register for part-time.
- Graduate with a PASS
- Graduate with a CREDIT
- Graduate with a MERIT
- Graduate with a DISTINCTION
- Deferred examinations: Recorded when students have been granted deferred examinations.
- Incomplete (I): Recorded when student has not completed a course or part of the programme for the specific academic term.
- To full-time (FT): Recorded when students are to return to full-time study (applicable to students who were on part time who have passed the courses which led them to being on part time).
- Exclude School (ES): Recorded by the Board of Examiners in the School when the students have failed to complete the Schools requirements as laid down by the Senate and therefore cannot complete their studies in the present School
- Exclude University (EU): For use by Senate only. Recorded when students are excluded permanently from further study at the University. Used when students have not satisfied Senate Regulations.
- Withdrawal without permission (WTP): Recorded when students have left the University without permission.
- Withdrawal with permission (WP): Recorded when students have been granted leave of absence from the University for one academic year. The student is eligible to re-enter the university in subsequent academic years provided they fulfil the conditions stipulated when leave was granted, without applying for re-admission. Students must inform the Academic Office two months before the opening of the University in the academic year which they intend to register.
- Suspended (S): Recorded when students have been temporarily suspended for disciplinary reasons. (For use by the Senate only)
- Expelled (E): Recorded when a student is expelled for disciplinary reasons.
- Part-time (PT): Recorded at the beginning of the Academic Year when students are studying part-time. Such students must contact the Academic Office within two weeks after publication of results to indicate whether or not they intend to register for part-time.
- No examination taken (NE): Recorded when a student did not sit for examinations in that particular course in that particular academic year.
