School Regulations

The decision of the university senate shall be final and binding on matters concerning the interpretation or revision of school regulations.

Admission Requirements
A candidate must fulfil the following entry requirements for admission to one of the school’s departments.

  1. The general entrance requirements of the Copperbelt University.
  2. The entrance requirements prescribed by the School. These particular requirements are five GCE ‘O’ Level credits or better in the Zambian School Certification or its equivalent, as follows:
  1. English language
  2. Mathematics
  3. Either ONE or TWO subjects from Physical Science, Science, Chemistry, and Physics.

           N.B. If a candidate offers Physical Science and Science, this will be counted as one subject. If he/she has physics and chemistry as individual subjects, then they will be counted as two subjects.
d)  Depending on the subject(s) taken by the student in (c) above, a candidate may be  required to have taken either ONE or TWO  subjects from Biology, Additional Mathematics, Geography, Geometrical and Mechanical Drawing, History, Literature in English, Human and Social Biology, Religious Subject, Zambian Language, Commerce, and Principles in Accounts.

Candidates holding a good Advanced Certificate (i.e. an average score of at least 60%) in a subject relevant to the School’s programmes may be admitted to Diploma programmes in first year. Inquiries and applications for admission should be directed to the Academic Office of the Copperbelt University.

Progression Rules

ASSESSMENT

  1. The assessment of students in a course consists of continuous assessment and the final examination. The continuous assessment and the final examination are respectively weighed as 50/50% for diploma programmes and 40/60% for degree programmes.
  2. The continuous assessment consists of tests, assignments, projects and any other work that may be assigned by a Lecturer.
  3. The continuous assessment consists of at least two assessments in each term.

PROGRESSION

  1. A student is required to attend at least 80% of the lectures/ practicals delivered in the course.
  2. A student who has passed all courses prescribed for that year will progress to the following year or graduate in the case of a student in his/her final year.
  3. A student who has failed in three or more courses is not permitted to proceed to the next year of study or graduate in case of the final year student.

DIFFERED EXAMINATION

A student who is unable to take the final examination(s) by illness or by any other factors which are deemed to be beyond the student’s control may be permitted by the Board of Examiners to take differed examination(s).

REPEAT

  1. A student who fails one or two courses may proceed to the next year but is required to repeat the failed course.
  2. A student who fails three courses must repeat the failed courses on part-time  studies and pass all  courses before proceeding to the next year of study.
  3. A student who fails a repeat course shall repeat that course on part-time study.

EXCLUSION

A student who fails four or more courses is excluded from the School.
A student who fails a course while on part-time study shall be excluded.

GRADUATION
A student must fulfil the following requirements to qualify for graduation:

  1. Must have passed all courses of the programme undertaken
  2. Must have passed practical training during Industrial Attachment

CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREES

  1. To pass a course a student must score at least a C or 50%
  2. The degree of Bachelor of Engineering/Science is classified as Distinction, Merit, Credit, or Pass.
  3. An Aegrotat pass is given on compassionate grounds for deserving cases.

To calculate the grade of the degree, the following is applied using the grades obtained in third to fifth year:

COURSE CODING

  1. The letters and numbers represent the course code (i.e. two letters for degree courses, except BIT and three letters for diploma courses. The letter ‘D’ stands for Diploma in the diploma course codes). The third digit indicates the course weight designation:  0 for full credit course and 1-9 for half credit courses.
