Department of Building Science
As an academic subject Building Science forms the basis for several specialisation related to the economics and management of constructions projects. The discipline of Quantity Surveying is one such specialisation. Detailed calculations and measurement are taken from architect's drawings to quantify the materials, planning and labour required to construct the building. This enables the likely cost involved during the various stages of implementation to be calculated. A thorough understanding of building technology is a pre-requisite for the preparation of bills of quantities and cost esimates. In addition, students are exposed to the principles of building economics, law and professional practice.
The increasing complexity in the administration of large-scale construction projects has been responsible for the emergence of the closely related discipline of construction management. This particular line of specialisation is also covered by the Building Science syllabus and students are further introduced to advanced management techniques in the constuction industry
There are two degree offered in the Department of Building:
Degree of Bachelor of Science in Building, and
Degree of Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying
This two have common foundation with the other degree courses and they share the second and third years. However, Students build on their specialisation in the fourth year. |
