Mining Department
The Mining Department is part of the School of Technology
The Department is located on the Eastern wing of the School
of Technology. The Department offers courses in Mining at
both Degree and Diploma level. In addition the Department
offers customer tailored technician courses to carter for
the growing demand of artisan qualification in the Mining
industry.
The student enrollment is over 300 from first year to finalists
of which 15% are female. Course duration is 5 years for
Degree programs and 3 years for Diploma courses.
Academic Staff
The Department currently has 18 members of academic lecturing
staff which include staff development fellows. The teaching
staff is complimented by part-time lecturers and 2 technicians
and support services personnel. Most of the academic staff
offices including that of the HOD are within the department
buildings.

Lectures are conducted within the departmental lecture rooms.
Mining

The department has fully fledged mining and metallurgical
laboratories where academic experiments and industrial research
work is carried out.
The department has also got a state of the art Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer (AAS) equipment to compliment the analytical
services laboratory. The AAS is currently able to analyze
11 elements mainly base metals such as copper and cobalt.
The equipment can detect as low concentration in a rock
sample as 1ppm |
