The School of Technology came into existence as a result of the integration of the Zamibia Institute of Technology (ZIT) into the Copperbelt University on 1st January, 1989. The School of Technology them comprised the Academic and Industrial Science Department, the Electrical Engineering Department and them Mining Department.
In 1996 the School introduced three degree programmes namely:
These were followed by Bachelor of Engineering in Mining and Metallurgy Engineering.
The School of Technology was established to meet the demand for engineers, technologists and technicians at the time of Zambia's independence. Prior to independence, there was heavy reliance on expatriate manpower in these fields. In 1965 or 1966, for example, expatriate officers ocuppied ninety percent (90%) of the middle level technical jobs. The Government found it necessary to address the deficiencies in technical education.
The rapid industrialisation of the Zambian economy has seen an upsurge in industrial activities in the country. The implicationations of the revamped economic activities is taht there has been an increase in the demand for engineers, technologists and technicians. The purpose of the school therefore is to promote the development science, technology and environmental studies aimed at producing professionally qualified persons to meet the technical needs of the country. In addition, the school renders high quality service in the form of research and consultancy.
