BACKGROUND
Initiated in 1995 with the main objective of promoting HIV/AIDS prevention in Zambian prisons using inmates and officers as key players in the intervention. There are currently 13,000 inmates and 2,000 officers in the country's prisons.

ISSUES
Risk behaviours and associated factors for HIV transmission in Zambian prisons:

  • Unprotected sex between men
  • Sharing of shaving appliances (razor blades etc).
  • Tattooing
  • Intravenous drug use (IVDU)
  • Lack of HIV/AIDS educational activities

"All prisoners have the right to receive health care, including preventive measures, equivalent to that available in the community without discrimination, in particular with respect to their legal status or nationality"
- WHO 1993
